Soft close: what you are actually paying for
It is the most upsold feature in kitchen hardware and one of the few that genuinely earns its price, on some of the doors.

What the mechanism actually is
A soft close is a damper, usually a small sealed piston, that catches the last few centimetres of travel and slows the door or drawer into its closed position. It does nothing for the other ninety percent of the movement.
That is worth understanding, because it means soft close is not a measure of quality in a runner. A cheap runner with a damper on it is still a cheap runner. The extension type and the load rating tell you far more about how it will feel in five years.
Where it earns the money
On daily-use kitchen drawers, clearly. Not mainly for the quiet, though that is what sells it, but because slamming is what loosens carcass joints and misaligns fronts over years. A damper removes the repeated shock from a joint that is being hit forty times a day.
On wardrobe doors it is more of a comfort feature, and on rarely opened storage it is close to pointless. If a budget has to be trimmed, taking soft close off the tall unit nobody opens is a better cut than taking it off the cutlery drawer.
Telling a good damper from a bad one at the counter
Push the drawer closed hard and watch the last stretch. A good damper takes the speed out smoothly and lands the drawer without a bounce. A poor one either stops it dead, which you feel as a jolt, or gives up under the push and lets it slam anyway.
Then do it again gently, with the drawer nearly empty. A cheap damper often fails to pull a light drawer fully home, and you end up with a drawer that sits a few millimetres proud. This is the failure mode people live with for years without ever identifying it.
Load changes how it behaves
Dampers are tuned for a load range. The same mechanism that closes a loaded drawer beautifully may be too strong for an empty one and too weak for an overloaded one. If a drawer is going to carry serious weight, say the item on it at the counter, because on several systems the damper is a separate specification rather than a fixed part of the runner.
