What a modular kitchen actually costs in Kerala

The quote is four things, and only two of them last

Nearly every modular kitchen quotation in Kerala breaks into carcass, shutters, hardware and appliances, plus labour. Two of those are structural and two are cosmetic, and most people spend as though it were the other way round.

Shutters are the part everyone chooses first and the part most easily replaced later. A shutter finish can be changed in a decade for a fraction of the original kitchen cost. Carcass material and the hardware inside cannot: replacing a runner means emptying and dismantling the unit, and replacing a swollen carcass means replacing the kitchen.

• Carcass, the boxes: plywood, HDHMR or particle board. Structural. Gets wet. Do not economise here in Kerala.
• Shutters, the fronts: laminate, acrylic, lacquered glass, membrane. Cosmetic and replaceable.
• Hardware, the moving parts: runners, hinges, pull-outs, lift-ups. Structural in practice, because failure here makes the kitchen unusable.
• Appliances: chimney, hob, oven, sink. Independent of the kitchen and replaceable on their own cycle.

Why the carcass decision is different in Kerala than elsewhere

A kitchen in a dry climate can get away with material that a Kerala kitchen cannot. Coastal humidity sits high most of the year, the monsoon runs for months, and the cabinet under the sink is damp far more often than anybody admits.

Particle board fails first and fails badly: once water reaches the core it swells, and swollen board does not recover, it crumbles. Boiling water proof plywood costs more per sheet and is the single decision most likely to determine whether the kitchen is sound in ten years. This is also the line item most often quietly downgraded between the quotation and the delivery, so it is worth writing the grade into the order and checking the stamp on the sheets when they arrive.

Where hardware sits in the budget, and why it moves

Hardware is usually the smallest of the four line items and it is the one you touch every day. Runners, hinges and pull-outs are what make a kitchen feel well made or cheap, and they are also the reason people replace kitchens that are structurally fine.

Within hardware, price moves on three things: extension type, load rating and soft close. Full extension against partial is the difference between a drawer and a hole you lose things in. Load rating decides whether a pull-out full of steel vessels still closes square in five years. Soft close is genuinely worth having on daily-use drawers, both for noise and because slamming is what loosens carcass joints over time.

Hafele and Hettich both report that hardware and accessories are the fastest-growing part of Indian kitchen budgets, which matches what crosses this counter. People have worked out that this is the part that decides how the kitchen ages.

The corner is the most expensive square foot in the room

Almost every L-shaped Kerala kitchen has a blind corner. Left plain, it is dead space you reach into on your knees, and it is usually the single largest volume of unusable storage in the kitchen.

A magic corner or a carousel unit converts it. It is not cheap and it is one of the few fittings people come back and thank us for. If something has to come out of the budget, take it out of the shutter finish and leave the corner in.

What to ask for in a quotation

Most quotations in this market are a single number with a layout drawing attached, which makes them impossible to compare and easy to downgrade after signing. Ask for the four line items separated, and ask for the hardware named.

• Carcass material and grade, written down, with the brand of board
• Shutter finish and its thickness
• Hardware brand and model, per item type, not "imported fittings"
• Extension type and load rating on every runner
• Which appliances are included and which are assumed
• What the labour figure covers, and what happens if the site is not ready

A word on the number people quote

Our own published starting point for a modular kitchen in Kerala is Rs 1.5 lakh, and that is a genuine entry point rather than a headline: a small kitchen, sensible carcass, basic hardware, no appliances. The same kitchen with full-extension soft-close hardware throughout, a corner solution, and a decent chimney and hob will be a multiple of it.

Anyone quoting a firm figure before seeing the room is quoting a fiction. The measurements decide it, and the fittings decide how it feels a decade later.
