What size chimney a Kerala kitchen actually needs

The number on the box is measured in a laboratory with no duct attached. Here is how it behaves in a real kitchen in Trivandrum.

Start from the room, then correct for how you cook

The standard method is air changes per hour. Take the kitchen volume in cubic metres and multiply by ten to twelve. A typical Trivandrum kitchen of around 28 cubic metres therefore lands somewhere near 1,000 m3/hr as a baseline.

That baseline was written around Western cooking. Malayali cooking tempers mustard seed and curry leaves in hot oil most days, often twice, and that produces a burst of hot aerosolised oil that a chimney sized for gentle sauteing simply does not catch. If tempering is daily in your house, treat the calculation as a floor rather than an answer and go a step above it.

Duct length is the specification nobody checks

Chimney ratings are measured with a short straight duct. Every additional metre of ducting costs airflow, and every ninety-degree bend costs more than a metre does.

A 1,200 m3/hr chimney venting through a long run with two right angles can perform like an 800. This is the most common reason a customer is disappointed with a chimney that was, on paper, more than enough. Measure the route to the outside wall before you choose the model. If the run is long and unavoidable, buy the higher rating rather than the better badge.

Width should follow the hob, not the wall

The capture area needs to overhang the cooking surface, so hob width drives chimney width. A 4-burner or wider hob wants 90cm. A 2 or 3 burner hob in a small kitchen is properly served by 60cm, and a 90cm unit there simply costs more to buy and run.

Mounting height matters as much as width: too high and the plume disperses before it is captured, too low and you cannot see the back burners. Manufacturers state a range and it is worth following it rather than aligning the chimney to a cabinet line.

Filterless, baffle, and what auto-clean actually does

Filterless models have no mesh to soak and scrub, which suits heavy Indian cooking and is the reason most of our customers now choose them. Baffle filters cost less, are simple, and need periodic cleaning.

Auto-clean is a convenience feature and not a performance one. It heats a collection bowl so oil runs off rather than baking on. It does not increase suction, and a lower-rated auto-clean chimney will not outperform a higher-rated one without it.

Coastal air, and what fails first

Within a few kilometres of the sea, salt gets at fasteners and thin steel long before the motor gives out. When two models look identical on the spec sheet, the difference is usually body material and fastener quality. That is worth asking about directly, because it is rarely on the box.

Questions this raises

What suction chimney is best for an Indian kitchen in Kerala?

Around 1,000 to 1,200 m3/hr suits most Trivandrum kitchens. Go higher if you temper in hot oil daily or if the duct run to the outside wall is long or has multiple bends.

Is a filterless chimney better than a baffle filter one?

For heavy Indian cooking, usually yes, because there is no mesh to soak and scrub. Baffle filters cost less and work perfectly well if you are willing to clean them.

Does Pankaj Interiors install chimneys?

No. We supply the chimney and tell you exactly what the duct route needs. Installation is done by your electrician or carpenter, or by the brand service network.
